OXFORD, Miss. - No. 31 Auburn women's tennis fell 4-3 Sunday on the road to No. 16 Ole Miss at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
The Tigers (11-6, 1-4 SEC) battled back and forth with Ole Miss (11-4, 3-3 SEC) in a marathon match. Auburn opened the contest by claiming the doubles point, but had to battle back from a 3-1 deficit late in the match.
No. 6 Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger earned their 19th win of the season by topping Ole Miss' tandem of Erin Stephens and Iris Verboven, 8-3, at the No. 1 line. The Rebels got a win on court two from Julia Jones and Natalie Suk as Auburn's Reka Muller and Jen Pfeifler fell, 8-3.
Auburn's Michala Kucharova and Paula de Man continued their strong play and won the deciding match in doubles, defeating the Rebel's Arianne Hartuno and Mai El Kamash, 8-6, on court three to seal the point for the Tigers.
In singles, straight-set wins by Ole Miss on courts one, three and four quickly gave the Rebels a 3-1 advantage.
Paula de Man cut the deficit down to 3-2 by topping the Rebel's Stephens, 6-2, 6-2 on court five. de Man is a perfect 5-0 at the No. 5 spot in the lineup this year.
Auburn's Andie Dikosavljevic tied the match at 3-3 by earning a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) victory on court two over Ole Miss' No. 50 Arianne Hortuno. The win marked Dikosavljevic's first victory over a ranked opponent this season.
In the deciding match, Jen Pfeifler dropped the opening set and battled back to force her match on court six to a third, but ultimately fell to Ole Miss' Zalina Khairudinova 7-6 (5), 6-7 (8), 6-2.
Auburn returns to the road next weekend to take on Texas A&M next Friday at 3 p.m. in College Station, Texas. The Tigers close out the weekend at LSU on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT in Baton Rouge, La.
