Auburn women wrap up day one of NCAA Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Auburn's 200-yard freestyle relay placed sixth overall as the Tigers wrapped up the opening day of competition at the 2015 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The squad of Allyx Purcell, Megan Fonteno, Ashton Ellzey and Valerie Hull opened the finals session with a time of 1:27.88. Hull turned in the second-best anchor split of the night at 21.46 to bring the relay home for Auburn.

The Tigers swam their best time in the event at the NCAA meet since 2009 during Thursday's prelims, posting a 1:27.72 to qualify for the championship final.

Auburn closed out the night by taking 14th overall in the 400 medley relay as Jillian Vitarius, Annie Lazor, Alex Merritt and Valerie Hull clocked a 3:33.92 in the consolation final to score valuable points as the meet moves into its second day of competition.

The Tigers are in 13th place in the team standings heading into Friday's second day of action. Georgia holds a ten-point lead over California after the lightest day of competition with a 172-162 advantage, followed by Stanford (111), Texas A&M, Virginia (76) and Louisville (76).

Day two of the 2015 NCAA Championships begins Friday at 10 a.m. CT with preliminaries for the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and the 100 breaststroke.
