ATLANTA - Despite a quality start from senior right-hander Rocky McCord, Auburn baseball came up short 4-1 on Tuesday against Georgia Tech at Russ Chandler Stadium.
"This one came down to who scored," Auburn head coach Sunny Golloway said. "They found a way to score and you have to give them credit. They had some really good swings late in the game.
"I thought Rocky [McCord] did a tremendous job starting the game. He pitched really well and kept us in the ball game."
McCord fell to 1-2 on the season despite allowing only two runs in six innings pitched. He struck out five with two walks while allowing seven hits.
The loss dropped Auburn to 15-10 on the season.
Kyler Deese picked up his sixth RBI in four games with a run-scoring single to right that plated Melvin Gray to give Auburn a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Gray had reached on a fielder's choice then stole second base to put himself in scoring position.
The Yellow Jackets (17-7) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI double by Arden Pabst. Pabst attempted to come home from third on a wild pitch, but Auburn catcher Blake Logan made a pinpoint throw to covering pitcher Rocky McCord to nail the runner at the plate and end the inning.
A near double play resulted in a run for Georgia Tech as Wade Bailey beat out a throw to first allowing Matt Gonzalez to come home and score as Auburn fell behind 2-1.
AJ Murray added a solo home run for the Ramblin' Wreck off reliever Dalton Rentz in the eighth inning. Bailey drove home another run on a double to left and Auburn trailed 4-1.
Gonzalez had two hits for Georgia Tech. Bailey had two RBIs.
Ben Parr (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 K) was the winning pitcher for the Yellow Jackets. He improved to 3-1 on the season.
Auburn grounded into a season-high four double plays on the night.
The Tigers are in action this weekend at Mississippi State for a three-game SEC series.
