STARKVILLE, Miss. - With the series already in hand, Auburn baseball fell to Mississippi State 3-1 on Sunday in the SEC series finale.
"We played great defense," Auburn head coach Sunny Golloway said. "We just didn't really hit today."
The loss dropped Auburn to 17-11, 3-6. The Bulldogs improved to 19-11, 3-6. Auburn had previously won the Friday and Saturday games by a combined score of 9-0.
Auburn allowed only three runs on the series, the second time this season that the Tigers had held its opponent over a three-game series to three runs or less (3 vs. Radford, Feb. 21-22).
With both teams scoreless, the Bulldogs took control in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs on a RBI triple by Wes Rea and a run-scoring single from Ryan Gridley.
Mississippi State had previously taken a 1-0 lead with its first run of the series in the second inning on a solo home run by John Holland.
Holland had three hits and drove in a run. Rea finished with two hits and a RBI.
Auburn battled back and Keegan Thompson's first career home run tied the game in the top of the third inning. The blast to left came in the sophomore's fifth at-bat of the season.
Auburn used seven pitchers on the day with starter Dalton Rentz lasting just 1.2 innings with one run allowed and three walks. Trey Wingenter (0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER) was charged with the loss on Sunday in his second appearance of the weekend as he dropped to 1-3.
Trevor Fitts (2-2) earned the victory out of the bullpen for MSU. He pitched 4.1 innings and did not allow a run.
Melvin Gray had two hits to tie his season high and lead the Tigers.
Auburn is in action next on Tuesday in Birmingham at Samford.
