Women's golf T-6th after one round at Darius Rucker

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Auburn women's golf team shot a first-round 298 (+14) Friday and sit in a tie for sixth place through 18 holes at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.

The Tigers, playing in one of the most loaded fields in college golf this season, held their own against a tough golf course - the par 71, 6,221-yard Long Cove Club - that did not surrender many low scores on the day. Only six competitors in the 90-player field finished below par in the opening round.

Senior Victoria Trapani and junior Alex Harrell led the way for Auburn with scores of 3-over-par 74. Trapani had a consistent day with 16 pars, marred only by a double-bogey at the 11th (her second hole of the day) and a bogey at the par-3 17th. Harrell carded a pair of birdies at 8 and 16 to go along with 11 pars and five bogeys. The two are tied for 22nd place.

Sophomore Clara Baena, playing her first tournament this spring after missing the opener with a foot injury, posted a 4-over-par 75, as did freshman Kelli Murphy. Both Baena and Murphy were steady on the day with 14 pars and four bogeys apiece.

Third-ranked Southern California holds the 18-hole lead after a 1-over-par 285. The Trojans are five shots clear of LSU (+6) and eight ahead of Arkansas, Duke and North Carolina (+9).

Second-round play begins Saturday at 7:30 a.m. CT. Auburn will start its round at 8:20 a.m. on the No. 1 tee paired with North Carolina and Duke. Live scoring is available at golfstatresults.com.
