AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn track and field team picked up seven wins and set 11 personal bests on Friday as the Tigers competed at the second annual Border Wars at the Mike Sanders Track Complex in Starkville, Miss.
In the first scored meet of the season, the state of Alabama women defeated Mississippi, 108-81, while the men fell, 98-93.
"We had a lot of good marks today," head coach Ralph Spry said. "The milers did well, as did Teray (Smith) and Kahlil (Henderson) in the sprints. Rachel Dincoff had another great day and Jonielle (Smith) did well in the 200m. We had a real good competition. We competed really well. We are getting better each weekend, and that is the name of the game. I am looking forward to home meet next weekend. We don't have to travel, so everyone will be well rested, and hopefully we can get some more national marks."
Sophomore Kahlil Henderson tied the nation's 12th-fastest time at 20.83 en route to winning the 200m title. In the 100m, Teray Smith clocked a personal-best time of 10.37, which ranks as the 17th best time in the nation heading into the weekend.
Senior Kane Grimster finished runner-up in the 1500m with a personal-best time of 3:45.45, which ranks fourth in the SEC. Junior Redatu Semeon posted a personal best in the event at 3:52.27.
Freshman Mitchell Gomez clocked a 14:54.50 to win the 5000m, and the 4x100m relay team of Torrey Campbell, Henderson, Joe Fisher and Smith placed second with a season-best time of 40.03.
On the women's side, junior Rachel Dincoff won the shot put with a throw of 53-11/16.43m and was the top collegiate finisher in the discus at 165-10/50.55m. Sophomore Emily Stevens set the program's eight-best mark in the 1500m with a personal-best time of 4:27.30.
Freshman Jonielle Smith won the 200m at 23.71, a new personal record, and sophomore Ebony Morrison was runner-up in the 100mH at 13.34. Freshman Kendra Mitchell won the javelin throw, after setting a 14-foot personal best at 155-4/47.35m.
Brianna Heilsnis (175-9/53.57m) and Amber Sudzius (165-1/50.32m) set new personal records in the hammer throw to finish third and fifth, respectively.
The Tigers will return to action April 17-18 for War Eagle Invitational at the Hutsell-Rosen Track.
