BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Auburn and the rest of the field fought through rainy, sloppy conditions in the first round of the 2015 SEC Women's Golf Championship, which began Friday at Greystone Golf & Country Club.
Led by a 75 (+3) from freshman Sophia Schubert, the Tigers shot 307 (+19) as a team to stand in a three-way tie for 10th place through 18 holes. All 14 teams dealt with persistent rain and a course with standing water on most every fairway by the end of the six-hour round.
"We had a strong start to the day," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said, "and we held on through most of the round. But our finish caught up with us. We're not out, we've just got to really get up and play some fine golf these next two days."
Starting with a birdie on No. 12, Schubert played her first seven holes at 1-under. A tough start to the front nine dropped her to 2-over, but she carded eight pars and one bogey the rest of the way. Schubert is tied for 23rd place after 18 holes.
Junior Alex Harrell rebounded after a slow start to post a 4-over-par 76. After three straight bogeys to open the round, she played the next 11 holes at 2-under, highlighted by birdies at Nos. 4 and 8. Senior Victoria Trapani and freshman Kelli Murphy each posted rounds of 78 (+6), and sophomore Clara Baena played her first competitive round in six weeks at 8-over-par 80.
Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Texas A&M are in a three-way tie for the lead at 5-over, with Arkansas, Florida, LSU and South Carolina all six shots back. Vanderbilt's Jenny Hahn was the individual leader through 18 holes with a 67 (-5).
Second-round play is slated to get underway with a 10 a.m. shotgun start Saturday morning, weather permitting. Auburn will be paired with Kentucky and Missouri for the second round. Live scoring is available at golfstatresults.com, and fans can follow @AuburnWGolf on Twitter for updates.
