BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman Sophia Schubert and senior Victoria Trapani posted strong rounds to lead Auburn in the second round of the SEC Women's Golf Championship on Saturday.
The Tigers posted a team score of 295 (+7) to move into 11th place through 36 holes at Greystone Golf & Country Club's Legacy Course. With weather conditions much more favorable than on Friday, every team improved their first-round score; Auburn was no exception as the Tigers were 12 shots better in the second round.
"It was a much better day today," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "Clara (Baena) is getting better feel, so that's good. Vic and Kelli (Murphy) had a lot of good looks today, and Sophia hung in there with a really solid round."
Schubert posted her best round of the spring, a 1-under-par 71, to lead the Tigers for the second-straight day. Starting on hole No. 11, she birdied three of her first seven holes and made the turn at 1-under. A double-bogey at No. 2 pushed her back over par, but she would play her final eight holes at 2-under with birdies at the fifth and seventh. She is tied for 16th through 36 holes.
Trapani improved by five shots over her first round with a 73 (+1). She was 2-under through five holes after birdies at 16 and 18, and she stayed at even par or better through 17 holes until a bogey at the 13th, her final hole of the day. Freshman Kelli Murphy posted a four-shot improvement with a 2-over-par 74 that included a birdie and three bogeys.
Texas A&M shot 11-under in Saturday's round to move to 6-under for the tournament and take a nine-shot lead over second-place South Carolina (+3). A&M's Bianca Fabrizio leads the individual standings at 7-under, one shot ahead of Carolina's Katelyn Dambaugh.
Auburn will be paired with Kentucky and Mississippi State for the final round. Live scoring is available at golfstatresults.com, and fans can follow @AuburnWGolf on Twitter for updates.
