AUBURN, Ala. - Damon Haecker hit his first career home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel Auburn baseball to a 3-2 win over Florida A&M on Tuesday at Plainsman Park.
"It was a grind," Auburn head coach Sunny Golloway said. "We didn't have a lot of energy in the dugout and I think that's coming off the emotions of last weekend. I guess that's something our program has to continue to work on is how important midweek games are, because they are important. You can't lose to a 200 RPI team and maintain a good RPI. We found a way to win. Haecker came up really big for us. Then [Justin] Camp coming in a closing it out did a good job. They had a seeing-eye ball there, but he did a good job."
Camp earned his sixth save of the season after shutting the door on FAMU in the ninth.
Auburn (26-16) broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning on a pair of sacrifice flies by Melvin Gray and Anfernee Grier to take a 2-0 lead.
The Rattlers (14-22) came back with two runs in the top of the eight off reliever Robby Clements. Jacob Milliman (0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K) got the victory after getting Auburn through the eighth. He improved to 2-0 on the season.
Four different Auburn players each recorded a hit, including Jackson Burgreen, who laid down the 26th bunt single of the season for the Tigers. That total is tied for tops in the SEC with Mississippi State and ranks second nationally.
Gray and Blake Logan had the other hits.
Alec Wong had three hits to lead Florida A&M. Kenny McDonald took the loss with one earned run allowed in one inning.
Dalton Rentz (4.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K) started for Auburn, but did not factor into the decision.
The Tigers host Georgia for three games beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. at Plainsman Park.
