PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior Ty McCormack won the Men's Championship 10,000m on Thursday at the 121st annual Penn Relays at the historic Franklin Field.
McCormack clocked a 29:21.39, the program's eighth-fastest time, to defeat Providence's Hugh Armstrong by over 33 seconds. McCormack's time ranks as the fifth-fastest time in the SEC this season.
"It was definitely a good day, and we had to show some mental toughness because of the weather," head coach Ralph Spry said. "The weather has been tough, and of course it's tough on everybody, but you figure out who you are when you have to compete in these type of conditions. Dominique Bullock jumped in the championship division as a freshman and placed second, so that is a really good job by her. Ty really capped it off tonight. Our goal was to get him a qualifying mark so we held him back a bit early in the race to make sure he was in good rhythm. He dominated the race and that time he got will get him into the NCAA Preliminaries. We have to pick it up tomorrow and keep pushing."
Dominique Bullock opened the Penn Relays breaking the program's freshman record in the long jump with a distance of 20-2.25/6.15m. Bullock set new personal best by eight inches to finish second in the event.
Junior Jessie Johnson finished third in the pole vault with a jump clearance of 13-1.25/4.00m. The women's 4x100 relay team of Samantha Scarlett, Jonielle Smith, Ebony Morrison and SheKara Martin placed second in their heat at 47.00.
Friday's action is slated to begin at 8:00 a.m. CT at the Penn Relays, while the Triton Invitational is scheduled to begin at noon CT.
