LUBBOCK, Texas -- The No. 7 Auburn men's golf team carded a 4-under 280 and is in seventh, one shot out of fifth, after the NCAA Lubbock Regional first round at The Rawls Course on Thursday.

Junior All-SEC Michael Johnson led the Tigers with a 2-under 69 and is tied for 13th. Sophomores in All-SEC Matt Gilchrest and Ryan Benton are tied for 21st at 1-under 70. Gilchrest fired a 4-under 32 on the back nine while Benton was 3-under on the front nine.

Senior Dan Stringfellow is tied for 35th at even par 71 while All-SEC freshman Ben Schlottman, is tied for 68th with a 76.

"We didn't have our best stuff today and didn't have all five of our guys in it early," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "Ben struggled a little bit, but he is a big-time player and will be there for us the next two days.

"We are still trying to figure out the golf course a little bit. We haven't played a lot of golf in Texas. It is playing faster today, and the ball is bouncing a little bit more. You look at the leaderboard, and you see a lot of the Texas schools there. We need to do a better job of adapting and get ready for tomorrow."

No. 2 Texas leads at 11-under 273, a shot ahead of Houston (274) followed by Duke (276), No. 9 Texas Tech (278), Purdue (279), No. 25 California (279), No. 7 Auburn (280), Louisville (283), Southeastern Louisiana (285) and Charleston Southern (286).

UC-Irvine and Georgia State are tied for 11th at 287 ahead of No. 23 North Florida (291).

"We are in good shape," said Clinard. "We just didn't play as well as we wanted to today. We have a great team, and we are looking forward to tomorrow morning and looking forward to getting started."

Purdue's Austin Eoff fired a 6-under 65 and holds the individual lead by one shot over a quintet of golfers in Houston's Kyle Pilgrim, Texas' Beau Hossler, California's K.K. Limbhasut, Texas-Pan American's Nicolas Patret and Kentucky's David Snyder.

The top five teams and one individual not on those teams qualify for the 119th NCAA Men's Golf Championship in Bradenton, Fla., at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., May 29-June 3.

Auburn will tee off on No. 10 at 8:00 am Central with Louisville and Southeastern Louisiana in Friday's second round. The third and final round is Saturday.
