STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Auburn track and field team recorded two top-5 finishes on Thursday to open competition at the SEC Championships at the Mike Sanders Track Complex.
Sophomore Veronica Eder finished fourth in the women's 10,000m at 35:17.49, despite losing her right shoe midway through the race. Senior Ty McCormack placed fourth in the men's 10,000m with a time of 29:55.97.
"What a gutsy performance by Veronica," head coach Ralph Spry said. "She lost her shoe about two miles into the race and was able to keep pushing and fighting to give us five huge points. I am really proud of her, and hopefully we can use that as momentum heading into tomorrow.
"Overall, I thought we had a really good day as we were able to get two guys into the 200m final and Sashel (Brown) in the 400m hurdle final. The name of the game is getting people in the finals, so we have to keep on building tomorrow."
Sophomores Teray Smith and Kahlil Henderson qualified for the 200m final on Saturday after placing second in their heats at 21.04 and 21.12, respectively.
In the men's javelin, sophomore Justin Carter placed eighth to earn a point with a season-best throw of 222-8/67.87m. Senior Adam Civitano clocked a new personal-best time of 52.60 in the 400mH to finish 10th.
In the women's 400m hurdles, sophomore Sashel Brown placed seventh with a personal-best time of 58.69 to qualify for the final on Saturday at 5:10 p.m. CT.
In the decathlon, Parker Shearer is fifth with 3763 points and Coren Crompton is eighth with 3619 points after the first five events. Shearer recorded a personal best in the 100m at 11.56, 400m at 51.50, long jump with a distance of 22-9.25/6.94m and shot put at 44-5.5/13.55m.
Crompton set a personal record in the 100m at 11.20, 400m with a time of 49.63, high jump with a clearance of 6-4.25/1.94m and shot put with a throw of 37-4.5/11.39m.
Shearer and Crompton will get day two underway on Friday with the 110m hurdles at 10 a.m. CT, while the men's and women's long jump will begin at 2 p.m. CT.
