STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Auburn track and field team recorded three top-5 finishes and had three athletes qualify for finals on day two of the SEC Championships at the Mike Sanders Track Complex.
"We had a pretty solid day," head coach Ralph Spry said. "Redatu (Semeon) did a great job in the steeplechase, and Jessie (Johnson) and Rachel (Dincoff) closed the meet on a great note. Rachel (Givens) was able to get a point in a very tough women's steeplechase. This is a meet where you need all the breaks, and we had three people who just missed the cut into the finals. You have to win those battles, because those points are really valuable. Parker (Shearer) and Coren (Crompton) gave us some big points in the decathlon. Overall, we had a solid day, but it is such a tough competition. We have a shot to put up some points tomorrow, so we need to come back ready to go."
Juniors Rachel Dincoff and Jessie Johnson earned 10 points after finishing fourth in the discus and pole vault, respectively. Dincoff broke her school record with a throw of 183-1/55.80m, and Johnson cleared 14-2.75/4.34m. Sophomore Rachel Givens earned a point in the women's 3000m steeplechase with an eighth place finish at 10:37.11.
Junior Redatu Semeon finished third in the men's 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:00.14. In the decathlon, the Tigers scored three points as Parker Shearer placed seventh with 7,091 points and Coren Crompton finished eighth with 7,021 points. Shearer's mark is the eighth-best performance in school history in the event.
Shearer set a personal best in the 110m hurdles at 15.01 and tied his personal best in the pole vault with a clearance of 13-9.25/4.20m. Crompton set personal bests in the 110m hurdles (15.16), discus (120-3/36.65m) and javelin (170-1/51.85m).
Senior Kane Grimster finished 10th in the 1500m to advance to the final with a time of 3:46.21. In the men's 110m hurdles, senior Torrey Campbell clocked a 13.91 to qualify for the final. Senior Samantha Scarlett advanced to the 100m hurdle final after recording a season-best time of 13.21. Sophomore Ebony Morrison narrowly missed the cut to advance to the final at 13.25, her fastest time this season.
Junior Joe Fisher recorded a new personal best in the 100m at 10.65, and sophomore Tyler Ross set a personal record in the 400m at 49.95. Freshman Jonielle Smith placed 10th in the 100m prelims with a personal-best time of 11.39.
