Auburn women win Furman Classic; Men take second

GREENVILLE, S.C. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" The Auburn men's and women's cross country teams continued their season at the 3rd Annual Furman Classic on Saturday.

The women scored 30 points to win the meet ahead of SEC rivals Georgia with 86 points and hosts Furman with 89. Freshman Brenda Kigen and sophomore Molly McKenna finished second and third respectively to lead the Tigers who had five of the first 11 finishers in the race.

"Overall I'm delighted with the team's performance," head coach Mark Carroll said. "The girls are running extremely well and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do for the rest of the season. The men's team ran a smart race and came through the field strongly to earn second place. We had a lot of big personal bests with the men which is exciting moving forward."

Kigen completed the 6k course in a time of 21:09.68 just ahead of McKenna in 21:10.51. Junior Veronica Eder was fifth in 21:18.13 while junior Rachel Givens finished ninth in 21:49.00 and senior Kristin Sheehan was 11th in 21:50.52.

On the men's side, the Tigers scored 46 points to finish second behind No. 18 in the nation Furman who scored 16 points. Senior Redatu Semeon led the way with a fifth-place finish and covered the 8k course in 24:36.68. The sophomore quartet of Wesley Pectol (eighth in 24:48.43), Coleman Churitch (10th in 24:58.64), Kevin Wyss (11th in 25:00.25) and Mitchell Gomez (12th in 25:03.37) rounded out the top-5.

The Tigers will return to action September 26 at the Panorama Farms Invite in Charlottesville, Va.
