TAMPA, Fla. - Junior CiCi Silva had a season-high 13 kills to lead the Auburn volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-14, 25-21) of South Florida on Saturday morning at the USF Invitational.
The Tigers (8-3) won their first of two matches on the day, avenging a five-set home loss last season to USF (2-8). Auburn will face St. John's at 4 p.m. CT in its final non-conference match of the season.
Silva's 13 kills and .360 hitting percentage were tops among all hitters in the match as the junior right-side put together her best performance as a Tiger. She was also in on three blocks as Auburn had 10 stuffs in the match.
Junior middle blocker Emily Klitzke had eight kills and six blocks, and sophomore outside hitter Courtney Crable posted a 7-kill, 4-block day. Sophomore setter Alexa Filley recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 24 assists and a match-high 19 digs.
Auburn hit .200 for the match and held USF to an .024 mark. The Tigers had 41 kills to USF's 23, won the digs battle 74-61, and had 10 blocks against the Bulls' four.
Auburn started slow in the first set, but took its first lead at 11-10 on a block from Breanna Barksdale and Brenna McIlroy. From there, the Tigers would never trail again, ending the set on a 10-3 run to take a 25-17 win. Silva had four kills and Klitzke recorded three of Auburn's five blocks in the opening frame, holding USF to a .000 hitting percentage.
Set two saw the Tigers pull ahead early and never look back in a 25-14 win to take a 2-0 lead. After taking a 10-9 lead, Auburn ended the set on a 15-5 run, hitting .278 in the game. In set three, Auburn led early, but the Bulls went on a run to tie the game at 18-all. From there, though, a 4-0 run put Auburn just three points from a victory, and kills from Silva and McIlroy put the game away.
