AUBURN, Ala. -- Sean White's sore knee limited him in practice, but it didn't stop him from keeping Auburn in contention on game day before losing to Ole Miss 27-19 Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
White, who showed he was ready in pregame warmups, and threw his first college touchdown pass, a 47-yarder to Ricardo Louis, in short order. Daniel Carlson kicked four field goals for Auburn.
Auburn used a revolving door at quarterback to start the game, with White, Jeremy Johnson and Kerryon Johnson taking snaps. But it was White who had the big play to Louis for a 10-3 lead.
White played most of the way at quarterback, though Johnson had a long pass completion after lining up at receiver.
Auburn's defense showed some toughness, stopping Ole Miss on a fourth-and-1 at the 5 in the middle of the third quarter. Later, a Kris Frost interception set up an Auburn field goal. But the Rebels still came up with big offensive plays.
Ole Miss scored first in the second half on a Gary Wunderlich's 37-yard field goal for a 13-10 lead. Carlson hit a 23-yard field goal to make it 13-13, but the Rebels took a 20-13 lead when Chad Kelly threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Jones.
White helped Auburn back, thanks to a 46-yard pass to Louis that would help set up a 33-yard field by Carlson with 14:34 left in the fourth quarter.
Frost's interception set up another Carlson field goal, but not before a little razzle dazzle. Johnson took a flip, and threw a long pass to Tony Stevens to the Ole Miss 3. The Tigers got no farther, so Carlson's fourth field goal of the game -- a 26-yarder -- made it Ole Miss 20-19 with 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
A Chad Kelly to Laquon Treadwell TD pass, plus an extra point, made it Ole Miss 27, Auburn 19 with 10:13 left in the fourth quarter.
Carlson kicked a 52-yard field goal for Auburn's first points. It was his fourth field goal of the season of more than 50 yards, setting the school's single-season record for big kicks.
Gus Malzahn took a chance midway through the second quarter, going for it on fourth-and-1 at his own 49. The Tigers didn't make it. Ole Miss soon faced a fourth down as well, went for it, and made it, setting up a 25-yard touchdown run by Akeem Judd to tie the game at 10-10.
