AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn scored all sorts of ways, successfully executed a fake punt and generally had a good time beating Idaho 56-34 Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium in a proper tune-up for next week's Iron Bowl.
The game likely as a confidence booster for quarterback Jeremy Johnson, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in a solid performance.
It was the most points Auburn has scored this season. Another good moment: Walk-on quarterback Tucker Tuberville played in his first game as his dad, former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, watched from the stands.
Auburn faked a punt to set up a touchdown and scored on an interception, a pass and a run. And that was just in the first half. Auburn scored two touchdowns in quick order in the second half for a 49-17 lead. Idaho made up ground late against backups. The next time Auburn plays here will be against Alabama at 2:30 p.m. next Saturday.
Auburn improved to 6-5 while becoming bowl eligible. Idaho fell to 3-8.
Johnson scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards, and threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ricardo Louis and a 5-yard TD pass to Tony Stevens.
He finished hitting 13-of-19 passes for 163 yards and ran for 23 more before departing with a big lead early in the fourth quarter.
Johnson's 5-yard touchdown pass to Stevens put Auburn up 42-17 with 12:02 left in third quarter. Johnson's 2-yard TD run pushed it to 49-17 six minutes later.
Roc Thomas' 56-yard touchdown run made it 56-20 with 12:46 left in the game.
Kevin Phillips' 24-yard gain on a fake punt, along with sporty running by Jovon Robinson, help set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Johnson for Auburn's third touchdown. Rudy Ford returned an interception 48 fancy yards for the Tigers' fifth touchdown.
There were plenty of regular touchdowns, too.
Peyton Barber scored on a 2-yard run 2½ minutes into the game. Robinson scored next on a 13-yard run. Idaho hung around early. Scoring on its second offensive snap on an Elijhaa Penny 4-yard run and an Austin Rehkow kicks a 25-yard field goal.
That field goal cut Auburn's lead to 14-10. But Auburn scored on the fake-punt drive and then, following an Idaho fumble, scored when Johnson threw an easy-as-you-please 15-yard touchdown pass to Ricardo Louis for a 28-10 lead with 7:58 left in the second quarter.
Ford then scored on his 48-yard interception return. Matt Linehan's 1-yard touchdown run with 2:25 left in the second quarter cut Auburn's lead to 35-17.
Johnson set the tone in the first half hitting 9-of-12 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. Robinson had 15 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown.
