RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" Sophomore Michaela Owen shot a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Auburn women's golf team in the first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday.
Owen carded a team-best four birdies on the day, finishing strong after some struggles midway through the round. Starting on the seventh hole with the shotgun start, she was 1-under through 10 holes before a bogey at 17 and double-bogey at 18 dropped her to 2-over. However, she got back to even par with birdies at the third and fourth holes before finishing with a bogey. Owen is in a tie for 20th place.
Senior Jamie Yun put together her second-best round of the year with a 3-over 75. She had a pair of birdies along with five bogeys as she enters the second round tied for 40th. Fellow senior Alex Harrell was one shot back of Yun with a 76 (+4). And freshman Mai Dechathipat, playing as an individual, matched Harrell's score with a 76 (+4) of her own, her second-best score of the year.
As a team, Auburn is in 15th place after posting a team score of 305 (+17). Georgia and Texas Tech are tied for the lead at 5-under, and Arkansas is six shots back at 1-over. Texas Tech's Gabby Barker leads the individual race after a 6-under 66.
The second round begins at 8 a.m. local time (6 a.m. CT) with a shotgun start. Auburn will be paired with Maryland, Clemson and Indiana. Live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
