BATON ROUGE, La. - With a score of 197.125, the No. 8 Auburn gymnastics team set a new program road score record Friday night in Baton Rouge. Behind LSU's 197.825 in the Maravich Center, Auburn's night total was it's second-highest this season.
"I'm excited with how the team did even if it wasn't our best meet," head coach Jeff Graba said. "It wasn't a sharp night for us on any of the events, but I think the team fought hard. Overall, it was a successful weekend in front of a large, hostile crowd. This is hard place to compete and I think they handled the pressure as best as possible here."
A pair of Tigers reached season-best scores on bars to open the night in freshman Samantha Cerio and senior Kait Kluz. Cerio kicked off the rotation with a season-best score of 9.825, while Kluz tied her season-high with a 9.875. Sophomore Abby Milliet also earned a 9.875 for the Tigers and redshirt junior Kelsey Kopec totaled a 9.800. Freshman Taylor Krippner closed out scoring for the Tigers with a 9.775.
Kluz picked up another season-high on the night coming on vault. The Wixom, Mich., product set a new season-best with a 9.825. Classmate Atkinson had the team's top score in the second rotation, scoring her third-straight 9.900 on the apparatus. Redshirt senior Lexus Demers and junior MJ Rott each totaled a 9.850 for the Tigers, while Krippner had a 9.800.
Auburn picked up momentum in the third rotation as a trio of Tigers scored a 9.900 or better. Atkinson earned her third-straight 9.925 to lead team, while Demers and Rott followed with a pair of 9.9s. Junior Kullen Hlawek set a new high on the season with a 9.875 and Kluz capped scoring on floor with a 9.850.
The squad closed out the meet with a season-best score on beam, totaling a 49.300. Four Tigers finished with a 9.875 in Cerio, Demers, Milliet and Atkinson. That total was a career-best for Cerio, a season-best for Demers and tied a season-high for Milliet. Hlawek added a 9.800 for Auburn.
Auburn (5-5, 2-3 SEC) returns to Auburn Arena for an SEC meet against Missouri, Feb. 26. The teams will face off at 7 p.m. CT and the meet will be broadcast online on SEC+.
