Birmingham, Ala. - Auburn senior Shawn Johnson earned first team All-America honors in the men's triple jump after a sixth-place finish in the event at the final day of the NCAA Indoor Track& Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex Saturday.
Johnson's sixth place was the best finish by an Auburn athlete in the men's triple jump at NCAA Indoors since 1998 when Andre Scott was third. Johnson's best jump came on the sixth and final attempt as he leaped 16.29m/53-5.50. Johnson was sixth after trials with a jump of 16.17m/53-0.75.
Junior Marshay Ryan claimed ninth in the women's triple jump to earn her second All-America honors in the event indoors. Ryan, who was a runner up as a freshman, jumped 12.91m/42-4.25 on her third jump of the day.
Senior pole vaulter Jessie Johnson earned second team All-America honors after finishing finished 13th in the event. Johnson cleared 4.20m/13-0.25 before coming up short on three attempts at 4.30m.
Auburn closed the two-day meet with one first team All-American and four second-team members.
Freshman Michelle Atherley and senior Samantha Scarlett earned second-team honors on Friday. Scarlett was 10th in the 60m hurdles with a PR time of 8.12, the second fastest time in school history, while Atherley was 11th in the pentathlon with a school-record mark of 4153.
Auburn will open the outdoor season March 17-19 at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
