ATLANTA - Peter Holoda is going to sleep in a little later on Friday. He has earned that right after one busy Thursday. After swimming four times during the morning prelims session, the sophomore from Hungary swam three more times during the nighttime finals, helping Auburn stand in eighth place after two nights at the 2016 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
"This morning I swam real (well)," Holoda. "I swam a best time (in the 50 free swim-off) and was just off a best time. I think I got really tired for this afternoon but I'll be in good shape for the 100 free (on Saturday)."
Holoda led off the 200 free relay in 19.39 before handing it off to Jacob Molacek, who went 18.98, the third-fastest second leg in the race. Michael Duderstadt swam the third leg in 18.91, the third-fastest third leg in the race, before giving way to anchor leg Kyle Darmody, who went 19.06, fourth-fastest in the race. Combined the team swam a 1:16.34 to finish sixth.
Holoda, who went 19.18 to tie for eighth in 50 free prelims and then a personal-best 19.13 in a swim-off, returned for the consolation finals and finished fifth in his heat in 19.44. Darmody was eighth in the heat in 19.74.
Holoda's night concluded on the last leg of the 400 medley relay, where Auburn finished second in the consolation finals (3:05.45). Joe Patching led off in a personal-best-tying 46.08 on the backstroke leg. Dudestadt clocked a 51.87 breaststroke leg before giving way to Arthur Mendes, who went 45.77 on the fly leg. Holoda then anchored in 41.73.
"Everyone stood up and gave it everything they got, and we saw that in all the relays," Holoda said. "Patching and I swam B Finals. It's a good, strong start for us and maybe we can come back the rest of the meet."
Patching earlier swam a 1:43.05 in the consolation finals of the 200 IM to tie for third in the heat and 11th in the event. The finish was the best of the junior's career in the event as he finished 18th as a freshman and 21st as a sophomore. He is the first Auburn swimmer to final in the event since Kyle Owens was eighth in 2012.
Auburn stands in eighth with 72.5 points. Texas is first with 209 points, Florida is second (163 points), California is third (141 points), NC State is fourth (137 points) and Michigan is fifth (90 points).
The championships continue on Friday with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 200 medley relay and 3-meter diving from the McAuley Aquatics Center at Georgia Tech. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT and finals at 5 p.m.
