OXFORD, Miss. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" Freshman Casey Mize pitched seven innings and allowed just one run, but Auburn baseball fell 6-5 on Sunday at Swayze Field.
"Casey really pitched and showed us some resolve today," Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said. "He's got good stuff. He had the sinker going. The slider was good. The changeup was there at times. Several times early he pitched in a lot of traffic and he always found a way to get out of it. He did a remarkable job. I'm excited about what he's done for us and how he's growing."
Mize had a career day with as he tied his season high with 7.0 innings pitched. He scattered four hits with three strikeouts.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with three doubles by Blake Logan, Jackson Burgreen and Kyler Deese. It was Auburn's biggest scoring inning in SEC play since April 4 against LSU.
The big inning chased Ole Miss starter Sean Johnson after just 1.1 innings pitched.
Auburn (18-22, 5-13) got some insurance in the seventh when Anfernee Grier scored from third on a double play. His run put the Tigers on top 5-0.
Niko Buentello had two hits for Auburn. The Tigers had five doubles, its most in a SEC game this season.
Colby Bortles hit a 2-run homer in the eighth to cut Auburn's lead to 5-2.
Henri Lartigue had four hits for Ole Miss. Bortles added two hits.
The Rebels (31-10, 10-8) rallied for four runs in the ninth including a 2-run homer by Ryan Olenek to win the game.
Ben Braymer allowed four runs in an inning-plus in the eighth and ninth. Gabe Klobosits took the loss with a run allowed on two hits to drop to 2-4.
Andy Pagnozzi pitched the final inning for Ole Miss and improved to 6-2.
Auburn is in action next on Tuesday when it hosts South Alabama at Plainsman Park.
