KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - No. 3/2 Auburn softball fell 10-2 (5) to No. 13/12 Tennessee at Lee Stadium in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Auburn (45-6, 15-4) and Tennessee (37-12, 13-6) play again at 6 p.m. CST on ESPNU.
Play resumed today after last night's game was postponed due to weather during the bottom of the first inning with Auburn ahead 1-0. The Tigers threw a season high 12 walks as Auburn suffered their first run-rule loss of the season. The Volunteers remained patient at the plate drawing four bases-loaded walks during the game and outhit Auburn 8-3.
Auburn held a 1-0 lead from Saturday night after Tiffany Howard reached on an error and advanced around the bases on two wild pitches. Howard supplied the next run for Auburn hitting a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score Jenna Abbott in the second inning.
Tennessee took a 3-1 lead during the first and added another run the next frame making it 4-2. Five runs crossed the plate during the third and a single run in the fourth gave the Volunteers the win.
Kaylee Carlson started in the circle for Auburn and after a leadoff walk the night before, lasted only three more batters on Sunday before Rachael Walters came in relief. Walters too struggled to find the strike zone and after Carlson reentered the game, taking her first loss (13-1) of the season. Marcy Harper finished the game for Auburn throwing the final 1.1 innings.
Victoria Draper went 2-for-2 in the game laying dropping down two bunts and Carlee Wallace provided Auburn's other base hit of the game.
