Grothe captures spot in 1500 freestyle finals at Olympic Trials

Zane Grothe will swim in lane 2 of the finals of the men's 1500-meter freestyle on Sunday with a spot in Rio on the line.

The Auburn record-holder for the 500-, 1,000 and 1650-yard freestyles, Grothe clocked the fifth-fastest time (15:11.72) in the 1500m freestyle on Saturday afternoon during prelims at the USA Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. Grothe, who already swam in the finals of the 400-meter freestyle and finished fourth, is trying to secure a spot on the USA Olympic Swimming Team.

Grothe and the 1500m freestyle will begin at 7:09 p.m. CT on NBC on Sunday.

Sunday is the final day of competition at the USA Swimming Trials. Swimming in the Rio Olympics begin Aug. 6.
