Auburn's Ben Schlottman advances to round of 32 at U.S. Amateur

AUBURN, Ala. -- Junior Ben Schlottman advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., defeating Mario Galiano of Spain 1-up on Wednesday in the round of 64.

Schlottman began his day 2-down to Galiano after the fourth hole before winning five straight on Nos. 6-10 to go 3-up. He dropped Nos. 12 and 16 before halving both 17 and 18.

Schlottman will play David Boote of Wales, who defeated No. 3 seed Gavin Hall of the University of Texas 3-and-2, on Thursday at 8:40 am CT.

The Advance, N.C., native averaged 72.57 last season with four top-10 finishes after becoming the first freshman in Auburn history to earn honorable mention All-America honors.

All-SEC senior Matt Gilchrest played in a 23-man playoff for the final eight spots in the round of 64 but fell short of advancing.

The round of 32 begins Thursday with the round of 16 played on Friday. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Friday and Saturday and the 36-hole championship match will be played on Sunday.

Television coverage for Thursday's round will be streamed on USGA from 10 am -- noon and Fox Sports 1 from 2-5 pm. The quarterfinals on Friday will air on Fox Sports 1 from 2-5 pm while the semifinals on Saturday air on FOX from 2-5 pm. The 36-hole championship on Sunday airs on USGA from 10-noon and on FOX from 2-5 pm.
