TOLEDO, Ohio - No. 11 Auburn men's golf is in second at 7-under 280-281-561 after the first and second rounds at the Inverness Intercollegiate at the Inverness Club on Monday. All-SEC senior Matt Gilchrest holds the individual lead at 6-under 64-72-136, one shot better than Duke's Matt Oshrine (5-under 67-70-137).
The Tigers are three shots back of No. 23 Duke (277-281-558) and 16 shots ahead of Michigan State (290-287-577).
Gilchrest, a native of Southlake, Texas, set the Inverness Intercollegiate record by firing an opening round 7-under 64, tying his career-best. He eagled the 13th and 17th and birdied Nos. 2, 11, 12, 16 and 18, and then followed up by carding four more birdies in the second round on Nos. 1, 2, 6 and 16.
Gilchrest's 64 ties his own 2015 Amer Ari Invitational second round along with Stuart Moore at the 2006 Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate and Michael Johnson at the 2015 Primland Collegiate for the second-lowest round in school history. Kyle Kopsick holds the record at 9-under 63 at the 2009 Gary Koch Invitational.
Seniors Will Long and Ryan Benton are tied for ninth at 1-under 141. Long (73-68-141), a native of Gastonia, N.C., carded four birdies in the first round and five in the second on Nos. 2, 5, 8, 9 and 18. Benton (69-72-141), from Dothan, Ala., tallied seven birdies on the day, with five coming in the first round.
PING All-Southeast Region sophomore Jacob Solomon, playing as an individual, is a shot back at even-par 72-70-142. The Dublin, Calif., native birdied Nos. 1, 4, 8, and 18 in the first round and 2, 3 and 15 on the back.
Sophomore Trace Crowe is t-22nd at 2-over 74-70-144 while All American junior Ben Schlottman is t-34th at 6-over 77-71-148.
Penn State is fourth at 13-over 288-293-581 followed by Minnesota (296-287-583), Bowling Green (287-300-587), No. 21 Virginia (297-292-589), host Toledo (295-295-590), Michigan (292-300-592) and Saint Mary's (CA) (298-296-594).
Ball State is 11th at 299-297-596 followed by Austin Peay (307-299-606) and Miami (OH) (310-303-613.
