ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Auburn men's golf junior Will Long is in a three-way tie for second after the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate first round carding a 4-under 68 at the par 72, 7,017-yard Lakeside Course at the Golf Club of Georgia on Friday.
Long, rated the No. 9 individual in the country by GolfStat, is tied with Max McGreevy of Oklahoma and Chandler Eaton of Duke, and is one stroke behind Virginia's Jimmy Stranger (5-under 67) for the individual lead.
The Gastonia, N.C., native birdied Nos. 1 and 5 before sinking an eagle on the par 5, 540-yard ninth to make the turn at 3-under. He then followed with a bogey-free back nine with another birdie on No. 15 to close out his day.
Long, who leads the team with a 69.67 stroke average, was co-medalist for the first time in his career at this event last season.
No. 3 Auburn is in a three-way tie for seventh with No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 13 Stanford at 5-over 293.
The quartet of Matt Gilchrest, Ryan Benton, Ben Schlottman and Jovan Rebula is part of a 20-way tie for 43rd at 3-over 75.
No. 8 Oklahoma leads at 5-under 283 followed by Duke (285) as the only teams under par. No. 7 Virginia is third at 1-over 289 followed by No. 21 Texas A&M (291), Texas (291), No. 16 Clemson (292), No. 3 Auburn, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 13 Stanford and UCLA (295).
No. 6 LSU (296) is 11th followed by host Georgia Tech (297), No. 19 Southern California (299), No. 9 Wake Forest, (299), East Tennessee State (300), TCU (300) and Villanova (316).
