OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Freshman Alyssa Rivera has been tabbed to the initial list of 20 invitees for the 2017 USA Softball Junior Women's National Team (JWNT) Selection Camp, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA)/USA Softball announced on Tuesday.
Should Rivera accept the invitation, the Eagle Lake, Fla. native will have the opportunity to make the country's junior team in a tryout at Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Fla., Dec. 31-Jan. 1.
Rivera is one of only 10 currently enrolled at a Division I university to receive the invitation.
During the selection process, athletes will participate in position drills as well as simulated games and be evaluated by the USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Committee (WNTSC). Athletes who make the 2017 USA Softball JWNT roster will be competing at the 2017 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Junior Women's World Championship, which will be held July 24-30 in Clearwater, Fla.
The 2017 USA Softball JWNT will look to defend the Gold after a record-breaking performance at the 2015 WBSC Junior Women's World Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla. last August. In Oklahoma City, the JWNT went undefeated, finishing the tournament as the leaders in batting average (.425 team batting average) and 119 runs scored while limiting opponents to just six runs in a 10-0 performance.
