CHARLESTON, S.C. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" Junior Michaela Owen posted her second straight round under par, and the Auburn women's golf team remained in the top 10 after two rounds at the Cougar Classic Monday.
Owen posted a 1-under-par 71 which, coupled with her 68 (-4) in Sunday's first round, put her at 5-under for the week with 18 holes to play. She will enter Tuesday's final round in a tie for seventh place, four shots out of the lead. Her 36-hole total of 139 equals the sixth-best in Auburn history and is the 11th time an Auburn player has shot below 140 over the first two rounds of a tournament.
In Monday's round, Owen made the turn at even par after a birdie at the second and a bogey at the sixth. She dropped back to 1-over with bogey at No. 11, but made three birdies and one bogey over her final five holes to post her second straight round in red figures.
As a team, Auburn shot a 4-over-par 292 and stands at even-par 576 through 36 holes and in eighth place. A birdie barrage on the back side helped the Tigers overcome a slow start as Auburn carded 13 birdies over the final eight holes.
Freshmen Kayley Marschke and Elena Hualde contributed to the effort with rounds of 73 (+1). After making the turn at even par and a bogey at 11, Hualde bounced back from a double-bogey at the 13th with birdies on 15 and 18 to finish 1-over for the day. Marschke, meanwhile, was 3-over at the turn but made three consecutive birdies at 11, 12 and 13 to pull back even; a bogey at 17 was her only blemish on the back side.
Junior Kelli Murphy turned in a 75 (+3), and sophomore Mai Dechathipat finished with a 76 (+4) Monday.
Furman remained in the tournament lead at 18-under after an 8-under 280 Monday. North Carolina was one shot back at 17-under. Individually, Wake Forest's Sierra Sims and Furman's Natalie Srinivasan are tied for the lead at 9-under.
Tuesday's final round gets underway at 8 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. Auburn will be paired with South Carolina, Florida State and Michigan. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com, and fans can follow @AuburnWGolf on Twitter and Instagram for updates throughout the tournament.
