AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn defensive end Carl Lawson, whose ability to pressure quarterbacks is known throughout the SEC, is a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which goes to the top defensive player in college football.
The Maxwell Football Club announced the honor Monday.
Lawson's 7½ sacks this year is the most in the first eight games of an Auburn season since Nick Fairley accomplished the feat in 2010. That total is already more than Auburn's season leader in 10 of the last 19 years.
Nine of Lawson's 18 tackles this season have been for a loss. He also has a team-high 21 quarterback hurries.
The Southeastern Conference honored two of Lawson's teammates Monday when it named running back Kamryn Pettway as the offensive player of the week and Daniel Carlso as the special teams player of the week for their performances in Saturday's 40-29 win at Ole Miss.
