AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" Auburn women's tennis concluded play at the June Stewart Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee on Sunday with five wins.
Freshman Georgie Axon led the way for the Tigers with three victories. On Friday, the Welwyn, UK native defeated Kentucky's Emily Fanning 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. After falling to the consolation match, she turned around to defeat Milicia Novakovic (Kentucky), 6-2, 6-2.
Axon paired with sophomore Alannah Griffin in doubles to defeat Novakovic and Justina Mikulskyte of Kentucky 8-7 (7-1). Griffin defeated Novakovic 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 on Friday in singles.
After falling in the first round of singles to MTSU's Alory Pereira, 6-3, 6-3, sophomore Caroline Turner advanced to the consolation finals with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Summer Dvorak of Vanderbilt.
In Palisades, California, Alizee Michaud and Taylor Russo advanced to the main draw round-of-16 in the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American after battling through the qualifying round. The duo opened up the qualifying round with a win over UNLV's Carol Zi Yang and Aiwen Zhu 8-7 (7-5). After defeating Georgia's Mariana Gould and Elena Christofi, Michaud and Russo advanced to the main draw with an 8-4 win over No. 41 Julia O'Loughlin and Maureen Slattery (Denver), 8-4.
In the first round of the main draw, Michaud and Russo defeated Florida's No. 19 Belinda Woolcock and Josie Kuhlman 8-7 (7-5). The duo's run ended when it fell to No. 8 Maddie Lipp and Alex Chatt of Northwestern, 8-6.
Auburn women's tennis will return to action on Friday in the USTA/ITA Southern Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
