AUBURN, Ala. - The Southeastern Conference's leading scorer is more than just kicks. Auburn's Daniel Carlson has been recognized for his academics and his community service, too.

Carlson, a finalist for the Lou Groza Award as the nation's top kicker, was named a second-team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday. Wednesday, he was selected as Auburn's representative on the SEC football community service team for his positive work in the local community.

Carlson graduated in August with a 3.66 grade-point average in finance. He is in graduate school in the Harbert College of Business.

Carlson was recognized for his community service because of his work in the Champions of Chemo Lake Party for children fighting cancer. He is a regular visitor at Birmingham Children's Hospital. He is also active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has been involved in holiday toy and clothing collections and the Beat Bama Food Drive.

Carlson will be honored for his on-the-field accomplishment in the coming week. He's one of three finalists who will attend the Lou Groza Award banquet in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida on Monday. He'll head to Atlanta for the College Football Awards Show to see if he won next Thursday.
