AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn moved up a spot in this week's Associated Press football poll and jumped two spots in the coaches poll in a prelude to the Sunday release of the College Football Playoff standings that will determine where the Tigers will go bowling this post-season.
Auburn is ranked 17th in both the AP and coaches poll and now awaits the College Football Playoff bowl announcements starting at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN. A trip to the Jan. 2 Sugar Bowl to play Oklahoma could be in the offing.
The playoff standings to determine the four teams that will be headed to the playoffs were to be announced at 11:30 a.m. Sunday on ESPN. The next wave of bowl announcements, including the Sugar, were to follow. The Sugar Bowl, by rule, must take the highest-ranked SEC team not participating in the College Football Playoff playoffs. That will likely be Auburn. The Tigers were ranked 14th in last week's rankings, one spot ahead of Florida, which lost to Alabama 54-16 in the SEC title game Saturday.
Auburn didn't play over the weekend and is 8-4. Oklahoma beat Oklahoma State 38-20 Saturday to win the Big XII championship to improve to 10-2 overall after going 9-0 in its league.
The Sooners are ranked seventh in the AP and coaches polls. Additionally, Auburn is ranked 16th Sunday in the Football Writers Association of America Super 16 poll. Oklahoma is ranked seventh there as well.
