AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn fought back from a 3-0 deficit in a 4-2 loss to higher-rated Georgia State Friday afternoon in ITA Kickoff action at Wake Forest.
"We lost a tough, hard-fought match against a very disciplined Georgia State team," said Auburn coach Bobby Reynolds. "It was tough losing the doubles and getting behind early, but I felt we had the matchups to win at every singles position.
"We play a good Nebraska team tomorrow, and I look forward to seeing the guys make the necessary adjustments from today's matches."
Georgia State opened the action by winning the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. The Panthers captured singles wins on courts five and one, before Auburn's comeback attempt caught fire.
Sophomore Brandon Laubser got Auburn on the board with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over GSU's Jack MacFarlane on court six to bring the match score to 3-1.
Junior Edward Nguyen closed the gap to 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Panthers' Quentin Coulaud on court four.
On court three, Conner Huertas del Pino forced to a second-set tiebreaker with Andrei Andrukhou before the Panther captured a 6-4, 7-6 (2) win to make the team score 4-2. On court two, Carles Sarrio was tied 1-1 in the third set when the match was clinched.
The Tigers will face Nebraska (0-2) in the consolation match Saturday at 1 p.m. All matches are being played at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
Auburn is now 1-1 on the season, while Georgia State goes to 3-2.
