AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn dominated in singles and doubles, posting a 4-0 victory over Nebraska Saturday afternoon in ITA Kickoff action at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
"I was happy with how our guys bounced back today," Auburn coach Bobby Reynolds said. "The guys who won their first sets took care of business, finishing off their matches, and the guys who got behind early kept fighting and pushed to a third set.
"We still have lots of room for improvement, and we're looking forward to playing our home opener this coming weekend."
The Tigers got on the scoreboard first against Nebraska, taking the doubles point with a pair of victories. At No. 1 doubles, Max Hinnisdaels and Conner Huertas del Pino posted a 6-4 win over Nebraska's David Samardzija and Dylan Bednarczyk. The Tigers then got a win on court two from Edward Nguyen and Dante Saleh by a 6-3 score over Micah Klousia and Chris Dean of the Cornhuskers.
In singles, Olle Thestrup got things started on court six, making quick work of Nebraska's Rok Krizaj in a 6-1, 6-4 victory. It was Thestrup's first action of the spring season.
Conner Huertas del Pino followed up with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court three over Chris Dean, and Edward Nguyen clinched the shutout for the team with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Micah Klousia on court four.
When the match was clinched, the Tigers had won or was winning the second set in all three matches still in play.
Auburn is now 2-1 on the season, while Nebraska is now 0-3.
Auburn opens its home season next Saturday, February 4, with a pair of matches against Alabama A&M (10 a.m. and 3 p.m.) and hosts Georgia Tech on Sunday, February 5, at 1 p.m. All home matches are at the Yarbrough Tennis Center (771 Yarbrough Farms Blvd., Auburn) and admission is free.
