Maddie Cox and Alison Maillard both captured top-eight finishes on the 3-meter as action got underway at the Tennessee Diving Invitational on Tuesday afternoon in Knoxville, Tenn.

"Overall today was a decent day," head coach Jeff Shaffer said. "We showed a little bit of rust coming back off of Christmas break. Maddie and Alison did a really steady job on 3-meter while both Scott (Lazeroff) and Pete (Turnham) were both a little off what their average score is on 1-meter."

Cox posted a 292.75 in the finals after a 292.40 during prelims to capture fifth-place, moving up one spot from prelims. Maillard finished eighth in the finals (285.00) after scoring a 300.15 during prelims.

Claire Schuermann placed 27th (239.65) and Miranda Telmanik 30th (237.20).

"The positive is we are getting a lot of dives and training done at Tennessee where the SEC Championships will be," Shaffer said. "This will give us a good opportunity to get acclimated to the facility."

In the men's 1-meter competition, Turnham scored a 297.30 to place ninth in finals after a 291.70 got him into the finals. Lazeroff was 10th with a 283.25 in finals and a 284.30 in prelims.

Justin Checchin placed 28th (245.70).

"I need the whole team to step up, be a little more focused, a little more competitive and dive up to what I feel their ability is," Shaffer said. "Those are things we will work on throughout the rest of the meet."

The competition continues at 10:30 a.m. CT on Wednesday with the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter prelims. A to-12 finalist competition will immediately follow prelims.

Both men's and women's platform competitions will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Competing are 93 divers from 14 different schools. Participating schools include: Tennessee, Georgia, Carnegie Mellon, Missouri, NC State, Clemson, Auburn, Kentucky, LSU, Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina and SMU.
