Samford match two results
AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn men's tennis team (6-4) swept a home doubleheader with Samford (2-6) Saturday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center by scores of 4-0 and 4-0.
"I think we came out a little slow in the morning for the doubles. I stressed with the guys that doubles is all about energy and coming out quick out of the gate. Luckily, we were able to change it around late in the match at number one and sneak out a win in doubles," Auburn coach Bobby Reynolds said. "The guys came back in singles and got on top of them early. I felt like we got better as the day went on.
"In the second round of matches, we started off with singles and got a lot of first-set wins. We kept our feet on the gas and didn't let up. It was nice to see that as the day went on and they got more tired, they played better tennis.
"I felt like we played the tennis we were looking for all the way up and down the line. We played smart, high percentage tennis. We waited for our opportunities, and we went for them when they arose. If we can keep building off of that, I'll be happy."
In the first match, Auburn went ahead in doubles play on a 6-3 victory by Carles Sarrio and Olle Thestrup over Curran Verma and Hugo Moreira on court three, and clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 victory by Max Hinnisdaels and Conner Huertas over Jake Faundez and Eduardo Lourido Sanchez on court one after a thrilling comeback from a 2-5 deficit.
In singles, the Tigers won three straight sets to clinch the win. Senior Max Hinnisdaels led the way with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Justin Ghavami on court one. Sophomore Olle Thestrup followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Curran Verma on court five. Freshman Michael Durham clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Austin Heinz on court six.
Match two began with singles play as the Tigers defeated the Bulldogs 4-0. Michael Durham started the chain of victories with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Curran Verma on court six. Edward Nguyen followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Max Rebol. Max Hinnisdaels finished his day with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Jake Faundez. Olle Thestrup clinched the win for the Tigers with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hugo Moreira.
The Tigers are in action next Friday and Saturday at the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.
Auburn's next home match opens SEC play when the Tigers host Mississippi State on Sunday, March 5, at 1 p.m. All home matches are at the Yarbrough Tennis Center (771 Yarbrough Farms Blvd., Auburn) and admission is free.
