AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" Auburn senior Katie Frerking was named to the SEC Community Service Team for women's basketball, the league office announced this week.
Frerking, a senior from Johns Creek, Ga., has been involved with numerous service projects during her time at Auburn. She has participated in Compassion International, adopting a child from Africa and pledging money each month as well as communicating via letters. She has also carried on the team's involvement with Bravehearts and is a "buddy" to a young man in the program; he attends all of her home games while she works with the Miracle League when he plays. She has also volunteered with the Tallapoosa Girl's Ranch, helping with painting, construction and cleaning.
Along with the team, she has participated in the End Child Hunger backpack stuffing initiative in conjunction with the Jason Dufner Foundation. She went with the team to Storybook Farms and has worked with the Boykin Center daycare center, visiting with the team and helping with shopping for Christmas gift and needed supplies.
This marks the 19th year for the SEC Community Service Team for women's basketball. All league-sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004.
Auburn closes out the 2016-17 regular season Sunday as the Tigers travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to face the Arkansas Razorbacks. Tip is set for 2 p.m. CT with the broadcast on SEC Network and 93.9 FM.
