AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" Senior first baseman Daniel Robert extended his on-base streak to 24 games with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate including a three-run double, but Auburn baseball fell to Samford 7-6 Tuesday at Plainsman Park.
"I just told them that it was my fault," Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said. "I told them that I just didn't think we were very focused to start the game. We got four disadvantage counts with balls that were hit hard in the first inning. We battled and I think we're going to do that. We got away with it this same game last Tuesday against a different opponent. Once you score 12 runs you can cover up a lot of mistakes."
Robert's three-run double was part of a five-run fourth inning that cut into Samford's early 6-0 lead. Will Holland plated Dylan Ingram on a sacrifice fly to center and Jonah Todd singled to bring home Luke Jarvis as well as the Tigers clawed to within one at 6-5.
Todd has notched a RBI in five-straight games.
Samford added an insurance run in the seventh and Auburn (7-2) scored one in the ninth on a sac fly by Ingram to make it a one-run game, but could get no closer.
Auburn relievers Corey Herndon and Calvin Coker combined for six scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Starter Daniel Sprinkle (0-2) was charged with the loss after allowing six earned runs.
Samford's Tristan Widra (1-1) earned the win to improve the Bulldogs to 3-4. Wyatt Burns earned the save with 2.2 innings pitched and two strikeouts.
Troy Dixon had two hits and drove in two with two runs scored. Jordan Fucci had two hits and two RBI.
Auburn opens a three-game series with Lipscomb Friday March 3 at 2 pm CT in Plainsman Park.
