AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn opened its home season in men's tennis Saturday with a pair of victories, posting 4-1 and 4-0 wins over Alabama A&M at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
"I was pleased. A lot of the guys who don't get to see as much action got a chance to play two good matches today, and use what we've been working on in practice," Auburn coach Bobby Reynolds said. "I was happy to see that. They went out and took care of business. In singles and doubles all the way through, they went out and were working on the things we wanted. We have a challenge ahead of us tomorrow against Georgia Tech."
Auburn won the doubles point in the opening match with a pair of victories. On court three, Viboosh Chandrasekar and Max Sivalls were 6-0 winners over Joshua Wilson and Jarib Beazer, and Michael Durham and Olle Thestrup posted a 6-1 victory over Mateo A Monroy Ryeda and Carlos Salas on court two.
In singles, the Tigers got three straight-set wins to clinch the team victory. Freshman Michael Durham, in his first action of the spring, posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Mateo A Monroy Rueda on court three. Viboosh Chandrasekar was a 6-2, 6-0 winner on court six over Jarib Beazer, and Dante Saleh, on court four, clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Carlos Salas.
In the second match of the day, Auburn picked up the doubles point again, on a 6-0 win on court one by Olle Thestrup and Dante Saleh, and the clinching 6-2 victory by Vioosh Chandrasekar and Max Hinnisdaels on court three.
Auburn sophomore Brandon Laubser blanked Armando Gray Jr. 6-0, 6-0 on court six to gain the first singles point. Dante Saleh followed that with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Joshua Wilson on court five, and Max Hinnisdaels clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court two.
Sunday, the Tigers (4-1) will host No. 24 Georgia Tech in a noon match, their first outing against a ranked opponent this spring.
Lucky fans Sunday could receive either a t-shirt or a koozie during free giveaways. All home matches are at the Yarbrough Tennis Center (771 Yarbrough Farms Blvd., Auburn) and admission is free.
