AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" After picking up four combined wins in singles and doubles this past weekend, Taylor Russo has been named SEC Freshman of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
"It's nice to have Taylor recognized for what she has accomplished in such a short time," Auburn head coach Lauren Spencer said. "She is an extremely hard worker and dedicated to getting better every day. I predict this is just the beginning of the many awards she will garner as an Auburn Tiger."
On Friday, Russo and Alizee Michaud defeated No. 32 ranked Louise Kwong and Ines Vias of Illinois in doubles. With the match on the line in singles, Russo clinched with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over Jaclyn Switkes.
Against Michigan State on Sunday, the freshman picked up her team-best 17th doubles victory of the season as she and Michaud defeated Erin Faulkner and Aslina Chua, 6-2. She was first of the court in singles, playing in the number two spot for the first time in her career, to defeat Chua of Michigan State, 6-2, 6-2.
Russo and the Tigers will kick off the ITA Team Indoor Championships on Friday against No. 7 Ohio State. The match will be streamed live on FloTennis.com.
