Saturday Prelims Heat Sheets

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Haley Black didn't just top the school record in the 100 fly, she destroyed it.

"I came in knowing I could faster than I did this morning," Black said. "I really had my eyes on the school record."

The junior from Prince George, B.C., Canada, just missed the school record Friday morning with a prelims time of 51.47.

Back in the pool on Friday night in lane 4 for 100 fly consolation finals at the 2017 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Black went out in 23.62 and came back in 27.46, topping Olivia Scott's 51.46 mark from 2012 by .38 seconds to win the heat and take ninth in the event, earning honorable mention All-America honors.

"I was shocked," Black said of seeing her time of 51.08 on the board. "I knew that I could do it but when I saw it it was real. I said I could do something and I did it."

Prior to Friday, Black's best time had been a 51.80, set at this year's SEC Championships, while coming into this season she had never been below 54.10. Last year she was at home not only for the NCAA Championships but also the SEC Championships.

The difference?

"Confidence," Black said. "I'm so close to this team and that helps so much."

In the women's 3-meter diving competition, freshman Alison Maillard finished 20th with a score of 302.05, missing the consolation finals by 3.55 points.

"Disappointing finish to a strong meet for Alison," diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. "She was steady through five rounds and was in position to be top 16 with a solid last dive. Unfortunately, she left it short of vertical and just missed top 16 by a few points. I'm proud of what she accomplished this season and we have a lot of positives to build on for the future."

Auburn's 200 medley relay team, which was swimming in lane 8 of the consolation finals, was disqualified, negating any scoring.

Auburn stands in 19th place with 38 points.

The championships wrap up on Saturday. Events contested are the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, platform diving, 1650 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay.

ESPN3.com will stream the championships finals sessions live on Friday and Saturday.
