INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Michael Duderstadt will swim in a championship final on Friday night and Joe Patching and Zach Apple will swim consolation finals as prelims were contested Friday morning at the 2017 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium. Auburn will also have a team in the consolation finals of the 200 medley relay.
Duderstadt, a senior, finished second in his heat of the 100 breaststroke to qualify fourth with a time of 51.75. His time is the second-fastest in school history behind only his school record 51.50 from last month's SEC Championships.
Apple, who split a 1:32.39 as the anchor leg for the school record-setting 800 free relay on Wednesday night, smoked a 1:33.44 in the opening heat of the 200 free on Friday morning, the 12th-fastest time of the session. His time was just .05 seconds shy of the school record of 1:33.39 set by Hugo Morris at the 2015 SEC Championships.
Joe Patching will swim in the consolation finals of the 400 IM after touching in 3:43.34. His time was the eighth-fastest performance in school history in an event in which he now holds six of the top 10 performances in school history.
Luis Martinez is the first alternate for the 100 fly consolation finals after clocking a personal best 45.92, which tied for the 15th-fastest 100 fly time in school history. It took a 45.87 to make the consolation finals.
Kyle Darmody is the first alternate for the 100 back consolation finals after touching in 46.23 this morning. It took a 45.87 to make the consolation finals.
Darmody, Duderstadt, Martinez and Peter Holoda qualified 14th for the 200 medley relay in 1:24.76. Darmody led off in 21.39 before Duderstadt went 23.80 on the breaststroke leg. Martinez clocked a 20.71 for the 50 fly leg before turning it over to Holoda, who anchored in 18.86.
Friday night's finals begin at 5 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on ESPN3.com.
