HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" Freshman Kayley Marschke was one of just eight players in the field under par Friday, leading Auburn with a 1-under 70 to open the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
Marschke is in a three-way tie for sixth place after the opening 18 holes at the Long Cove Club, which saw the Tigers shoot 299 (+15) as a team. It was a strong finish to her round that took her below par ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" after making the turn at plus-one, she made bogey at the fourth hole to drop to two-over-par thru 13 holes. But she finished with birdies on three of her final four holes to climb back into red figures and the tournament's top 10 after one round, two shots back of the leaders.
Freshman Elena Hualde is tied for 21st after an opening 73 (+2). The defending SEC Freshman of the Week made two birdies on the day but could not fight back from a stretch of three straight bogeys early in the round. Junior Kelli Murphy finished with a 75 (+4) and is tied for 44th.
Low scores were hard to come by Friday as just one team was under par through the first 18 holes. Alabama leads after one round at 2-under with a 282, followed by Duke at 286 (+2) and Arizona State at 288 (+4). Four players are tied for the individual lead at 3-under.
Round two begins for Auburn at 8:20 a.m. CT Saturday on the 10th hole. The Tigers will be paired with Furman and Arkansas. Live scoring is available at golfstatresults.com
