HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" Auburn freshman Elena Hualde moved up 15 spots to a tie for sixth place Saturday to lead the Tigers' women's golf team in the second round at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
Hualde, the defending SEC Freshman of the Week, carded a 1-under-par 70 in Saturday's second round to move from a tie for 21st to a tie for sixth place in the 90-player field. Her 70 was one of just six rounds under par for the day at the Long Cove Club (par 71, 6,218 yards).
A bogey-free first nine that included birdies at the 10th and 17th holes moved her to 2-under at the turn, and she offset two bogeys with one birdie on the front nine to finish in red figures for the seventh time this season. Hualde is at 143 (+1) for the tournament, four shots out of the lead.
Junior Kelli Murphy turned in a 74 (+3) to move up six spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 38th place. The highlight of the day was an eagle for Murphy on the par-4 fifth hole; it's one of just two eagles so far in the tournament. She also had two birdies on the day. Junior Michaela Owen shot 78 (+7) to move up eight spots on the leaderboard, and freshman Kayley Marschke recorded a 79 (+8) and is tied with Murphy for 38th place.
As a team, Auburn shot 301 (+17) and moved up one spot from 14th to 13th place at 600 (+32) for the weekend, one shot ahead of 11th-ranked Wake Forest and one shot behind 12th-ranked Arkansas. Alabama and Duke are tied for the tournament lead at 573 (+5) with Arizona State three shots back. Saturday's scoring average was more than half a stroke higher than Friday's first round with the field averaging a 75.89 on the par-71 layout.
The Tigers finish off the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Sunday with tee times beginning at 7:45 a.m. on the 10th tee. Auburn will be paired with Wake Forest and LSU for the final round; live scoring is available at golfstatresults.com.
