AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn guard Mustapha Heron has been named to the Coaches SEC All-Freshman team, the league office announced Tuesday.
Heron broke the Auburn freshman record by scoring in double figures in his first 25 games and has scored at least 10 points in 30 of 31 games this season. He ranks ninth in the SEC averaging a team-high 15.2 points and ranks 18th in the league averaging a team-high 5.8 rebounds. He is shooting 44.0 percent from the floor, 42.2 percent from 3-point range and 77.2 percent from the foul line.
The Waterbury, Conn., native has led Auburn in scoring nine times this season and has recorded six 20-point games.
Heron scored 20 points three times in SEC play against Ole Miss, at Texas A&M and in the series finale against Missouri. He also recorded two double-doubles on the season with a season-high 24 points and 10 rebounds vs. Eastern Kentucky and 15 points and a season-high 12 rebounds against Oklahoma in the Hall of Fame’s Birthday of Basketball in Uncasville, Conn. Heron scored 21 points vs. Mercer.
Heron, who is the first 5-star to sign with Auburn in program history, is the Tigers’ first SEC All-Freshman selection since DeWayne Reed in 2007.
Heron was named to the SEC Community Service team, as announced by the league office March 2.
Auburn opens the SEC Tournament Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn. The first three rounds will air on the SEC Network while the semifinals and finals will be on ESPN.
