AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" Conor Davis and Jonah Todd both recorded hits to extend their respective hitting streaks, but No. 5 Auburn baseball fell 5-2 to Troy in midweek action at Plainsman Park Tuesday.
"I thought [Max] Newton's changeup was really good and I thought he really competed well," Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said. "We hit three or four balls really hard, but right at them. They hit a few balls early in the game that fell in front of our outfield and kind of set the tone for the night. They definitely out-executed us in the ballgame."
Davis singled in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Todd finished with two hits ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" a pair of singles in the fifth and seventh ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" to extend his streak to 10 games.
Troy (23-17) scored a run in the first taking advantage of a lead-off double for a 1-0 lead. The Trojans extended their lead to 4-0 on a 3-run home run by Jackson Cofer in the fifth inning.
Auburn starter Christian Camacho (2-2) allowed four runs in 4.1 innings pitched. Elliott Anderson (1.2) and Daniel Robert (2.1) combined for four scoreless relief innings.
Jay Estes singled with the bases-loaded in the fifth to score a pair as Auburn (30-13) cut it to 4-2. Estes had two hits on the night.
The Trojans tacked on a run in the sixth on a RBI single by Trevor Davis to extend their lead to 5-2. Davis had four hits and reached base five times.
Max Newton (2-0) allowed two runs in five innings. Reliever Cory Gill struck out six over three scoreless innings. Marc Skinner pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save.
Auburn travels to Mississippi State this weekend for a 3-game SEC series at Dudy Noble Field.
