AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" No. 11 Auburn women's tennis ended its season in the NCAA Women's Tennis Round of 16 with a, 4-2 loss to No. 7 Texas Tech in Athens, Ga. on Friday.
"I am very proud of this team and how hard they have fought all season," Auburn head coach Lauren Spencer said. "I thought we came out strong in the doubles. We had good energy from the very start. Alannah Griffin played amazing, she put us on the board pretty early. As I told the team before, it basically came down to the fact that we are so similar on every court and it came down to whoever wanted it more. They were tougher today, they are a mentally tough team, and came out with key points to put them on top. We put forth a good effort, but they were just better than us today."
Auburn jumped out on top early with the doubles point, winning on courts one and three. No. 14 Alizee Michaud and Taylor Russo were first off the court as they defeated TTU's No. 26 Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici, 6-3 on court one. The duo is now 21-11 on the season with seven wins over ranked opponents.
No. 64 Georgie Axon and Caroline Turner clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 victory over Alex Valenstein and Alba Courtina Pou on court three.
Texas Tech clinched the match with wins on courts one, two, four and six. Alannah Griffin extended her winning streak to seven matches with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court five. The sophomore finished the season with an 18-11 record in singles.
Auburn will continue its season in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Tournament beginning Wednesday in Athens, Ga. Michaud and Dikosavljevic will represent the Tigers in the singles tournament for the second year and Michaud and Russo will team up for the doubles tournament. Draws will be announced on Tuesday.
