Auburn senior Austin Golson is one of 70 college centers named to the 2017 Rimington Trophy preseason watch list Tuesday, and one of eight SEC centers on the list.
Golson, a 6-5, 312-lb. senior, has started 24 games for Auburn since transferring from Ole Miss. The Prattville, Ala., product is a graduate student in the College of Education and a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
The Rimington Trophy is awarded to college football's most outstanding center each year within the NCAA Division I-A. The trophy was created to highlight the position, as center was the only position that did not receive an award at the end of each season.
Auburn's Reese Dismukes was the 2014 Rimington Trophy winner, earning consensus All-America recognition. The four-year starter from Spanish Fort, Ala., made 50 career starts for Auburn and was the all-SEC center in 2013 and 2014, as Auburn led the SEC in rushing both seasons.
The Boomer Esiason Foundation, committed to raising awareness and finding a cure for cystic fibrosis, sponsors the Rimington Trophy. Dave Rimington, former All-America Nebraska center, and Syd Russell, retired San Francisco Examiner sportswriter, founded the award in 2000. The Rimington Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association, an organization that presents 23 awards to the top individuals in college football each season.
