Grothe advances to finals at World Championships

Zane Grothe will swim for gold in the 800m freestyle after advancing out of prelims on Tuesday at the World Championships in Budapest.

Grothe, who swam at Auburn from 2010-14, finished 8th in prelims in 7:50.97 to grab a spot in an outside lane in Wednesday night's final, where he will vie for his first World Championship medal.

Also swimming on Tuesday was Luis Martinez of Guatemala. He placed 37th in the 200m butterfly in 2:03.10.

Wednesday's completion will include Grothe's swim in the finals as well as Marcelo Chierighini of Brazil in heat 11, lane 6 of the 100 free.

The swimming competition is being be held at the Danube Arena.
